Bihar Legislative Assembly

Satish Chandra Dubey entered the Bihar Legislative Assembly in February 2005, representing Chanpatia in West Champaran district as a Bharatiya Janata Party member. The February 2005 election returned a divided house and no government was formed. After a period of President's Rule, Bihar voted again in October–November 2005. He was re-elected from Chanpatia, and the BJP became a partner in the National Democratic Alliance government formed that November.

The 2010 Assembly election was held on constituency boundaries redrawn under the 2008 delimitation. He contested and won the new Narkatiaganj seat. He remained a member of the Assembly until his election to the Lok Sabha in May 2014. His official biography records the period as "2005 – May 2014: Member, Bihar Legislative Assembly (three terms)".

Lok Sabha: Valmiki Nagar

In the 2014 general election he contested the 2-Valmiki Nagar parliamentary constituency, which covers the northern part of West Champaran up to the Nepal border. He won with 364,013 votes. The result was declared on 16 May 2014, and he took his seat in the 16th Lok Sabha.

During the term he served on the Standing Committee on Labour from 1 September 2014, a membership renewed in each annual reconstitution through 2019. He also sat on the Consultative Committee for the Ministry of Power and the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy.

In the 2019 general election, the Valmiki Nagar seat was allotted to the Janata Dal (United) under the National Democratic Alliance's seat-sharing arrangement in Bihar, as reported by ThePrint. He was not the alliance candidate for the seat that year.

Rajya Sabha: Bihar

The death of the senior advocate and Rajya Sabha member Shri Ram Jethmalani in September 2019 left a casual vacancy in one of Bihar's seats. Satish Chandra Dubey was the only nominated candidate in the resulting by-election, and he was declared elected unopposed on 9 October 2019. The by-election covered only the remainder of the original term, which ended on 7 July 2022.

In the biennial election for Bihar's seats that fell vacant on 7 July 2022, he was again among the candidates declared elected unopposed, on 3 June 2022. His current term runs from 8 July 2022 to 7 July 2028.

Union Government: Minister of State

On 9 June 2024 the Prime Minister and the Union Council of Ministers were sworn in at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Satish Chandra Dubey took the oath as a Minister of State. His official Rajya Sabha record gives his office from that date as Minister of State in the Ministry of Coal and Minister of State in the Ministry of Mines.

He took charge on 11 June 2024. Shri G. Kishan Reddy, the Cabinet Minister for Coal and Mines, took charge of both ministries two days later.
